Welcome to Greenwich Scouting's Commissioners Corner page, which we hope will become a great resource for current and future commissioners as well as to help our Scouting community understand the value of working with their commissioner!
Commissioner Resources on BSA website
What is a Unit Commissioner?
Greenwich Scouting’s unit commissioners plays several roles for local Packs and Troops. They are a friend, teacher, unit “doctor”, counselor and representative! Commissioners are essential to Scouting by helping the unit, visiting meetings, answering questions, explaining best practices and supporting the Scout retention within a Pack or Troop.
Who is our Commissioner?
Every Pack and Troop has an assigned commissioner. If you don't already have it, contact Kevin
O'Shea at firstname.lastname@example.org
for your commissioner's contact info.
ASK THE COMMISSIONER
Featuring Robert Hoffmann
Robert Hoffmann has been an avid Scouter since Boy Scouts in Westmoreland-Fayette Council in PA, where he eventually earned his Eagle Scout rank with 4 palms! Robert wears many volunteer hats in the Greenwich Council including being a commissioner with various responsibilities, a past Board member, an associate Lodge Advisor for the OA and the list could go on for a few pages! He shares his home with his lovely wife Carol as well as their dog Cami and 3 parrots!
Robert, what is Journey to Excellence??
"Journey to Excellence
is a set of standards to help units, districts, and councils determine if they're delivering successful Scouting programing and to continue improvements that make Scouting even better for our youth." Units should be working with commissioners now to set their goals for 2012. Working to meet those goals will help improve membership, advancement, volunteerism, camping, training
, etc.- all enhancing a Scout's experience in Scouting. Robert encourages units to learn more about Journey to Excellence (JTE) by checking out the JTE Scorecards, FAQ, Awards, Webinars and more at the JTE webpage
. He also suggested visiting the Awards link
that has more info about multiple awards that Units can receive (some of which pertain to JTE, training, etc)!
Featuring Irene Stewart
Irene Stewart has been connected to Scouting since she was her sons' Den Leader. As the proud mother of our very own Camp Ranger, Scotty, she is still volunteering now! When Irene isn't helping out at Scouting events she loves to spend time with her large family, including five great-grandchildren. Irene is a part of many organizations including the Cos Cob Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary.
Irene, what is a commissioner??
"A commissioner helps Scouts and leaders. I particularly enjoy helping out at the Camporees and Derbies with registration, providing food and filling in where an extra set of hands is needed." Irene is right on about commissioners helping out. Commissioners can help answer questions about Scouting related topics like rechartering, they can offer an extra set of hands at your unit meetings and in the grand scheme of things their help will ensure that Scouts receive a quality program!
